Phone systems and PBXs

Telephone systems today fall into four principal categories: conventional systems based upon a switched architecture, IP enabled phone systems, pure IP PBX based systems and hosted IP telephony. Modern conventional PBX systems have moved on significantly in recent years. They are fully featured as far as telephony applications are concerned and most importantly, highly reliable. These systems are still the most popular type of PBX by volume sales, though their percentage market share is declining due to business demands to integrate voice and data applications in an open rather than proprietary architecture.

This has resulted in the rise of the hybrid PBX, IP enabled phone systems and the IP PBX.

The Enterprise Communication segment develops and markets a full line of enterprise or business telephony solutions, including IP-PBX and PBX telephone systems, analogue, digital, and VoIP telephone terminals, as well as contact centre software solutions. Key performance drivers of the Enterprise Communication segment include strengthening relationships with our partners while remaining current on technology changes in our market, including VoIP and cordless technologies.

In Summary - What your customers should be considering regarding IP

  • Will the organisation benefit from IP Telephony?
  • Will we need a system that supports Voice over IP in the future?
  • Does our existing network provide adequate bandwidth for our voice requirements?
  • Is there sufficient bandwidth during periods of peak activity?
  • If using Broadband to connect home workers, what types of broadband connection are they using, and do the routers used offer methods to ensure security such as VPN support?
  • What upgrades are required to provide and support Voice over IP? – Get a LAN / WAN health check. What are the costs for this?
  • What are the costs of installation, training, maintenance and network support?
  • Are the costs savings and business benefits showing clear return on investment?
